  • Police to watch over Mr. Gay Europe

Budapest: At an information meeting Wednesday the 20 finalists in Mr. Gay Europe learned that policemen and women from the riot police are going to protect them during the final this weekend.
Due to anti-gay violence in Budapest the last week the police has told the gay community in Budapest to cancel their pride parade twice because they fear they cannot protect the parade against a growing homophobic movement in Hungary.

The militant protestors have put up a web page with names and addresses of all gay venues in Budapest and already two bars have been attacked with fire bombs.

Even so, Wednesday this week, 20 young men from all over Europe met in Budapest in order to win the title of Mr. Gay Europe. This is the fourth time this competition takes place, and it celebrates the gay European man and pays tribute to the diversity as well as what we have in common as gay men in Europe.

The Mr. Gay Europe final takes place at the Copacabana Beach on Margit Island in the middle of the beautiful Danube in Budapest, Saturday July 5. The Mr Gay Swim Wear competition takes place at a new venue called Alibi 2 on Thursday July 3.

New this year is the so called “Challenge" (this can be a written test, a physical test etc) and this year it will be a professional photo shoot à la "Top Model", but with fashion for men. The photographers and stylists will be the judges of this new event and the winner will be fast tracked to the semi final on Saturday.

The Talent contest proved so popular last year and the content of the show was of such high quality and professionalism that it was decided the winner will also be fast-tracked to the semi final. This is introduced as an incentive to the Delegates who have worked long and hard on their acts that they will present on Friday evening.

The Mr. Gay Europe Pageant is much more than a "beauty contest". The young man selected will be more than just a pretty face and a sexy body. While physical beauty will be part of the judges’ considerations, it is a young man's inner values that will make the difference in their selection.
  • Mr. Gay Europe 2008 moves to secret location

Mr. Gay Europe is forced to move venues to secret locations due to anticipated clashes between the Hungarian police, right-wing extremists and gays celebrating Budapest Pride this Saturday.
The Grande Finale of Mr. Gay Europe was scheduled to take place at the Copacabana Beach on Margit Island in the river Danube. The local producer feels it necessary to relocate to a safe arena in order to secure the Delegate’s security and well-being. This decision was made after advice from local authorities and reliable sources within the police force.

“It is sad this has to happen in Budapest, this beautiful pearl of the Danube, which used to be a safe haven to all neighboring countries. This city has always been regarded as the Paris of Eastern Europe, a place where you could feel free and be yourself,” says the founders of Mr. Gay Europe, Mr. Morten Ruda and Mr. Tore Aasheim.

“We are a bit puzzled that Hungary with its tested past are willing to let a small group of ignorant individuals harm her good reputation throughout Europe. We understand the police’s challenges, and appreciate their support in trying to protect us. I saw their efficiency last year and was mighty impressed,” says Mr. Aasheim

Due to security reasons the official program has been removed from MGE’s homepage. Press and audience will be asked to gather in a safe place, and taken to the new venue where thorough security check will be performed. Press also need to sign up with the accreditation form online to gain access.

However, the proud and brave men of MGE do not give in; they continued as scheduled with the preliminary interviews where they were challenged to the max as they went through. Since Mr. Gay Europe is not a typical beauty pageant, the young men had to prove to the judges that they could put words behind their quest for the title.

Friday night the guys competed with showing off their talents. The Delegate from Northen Ireland surprised the other Delegates and the audience with a “secret weapon”, and took home the price “No. 1 Talent in Mr Gay Europe 2008”. With the help of an angle grinder and a metal plate he made himself into a human firework! Malta and Spain came second and third.

  • Swim wear competition with an artistic twist

It was the Delegates from Belgium, Norway, Spain and Malta that was named the top four finalists for the Mr. Gay Swim Wear Contest.
The Delegates of Mr. Gay Europe have had an incredible busy day. They started off with the so called “Challenge” which this year is a photo shoot á la Top Model, with some of Hungary's top stylists and photographers.

The Delegate went on to the second part of the challenge with a different kind of shoot with pictures for a planned coffeetable book and calendar. Then later in the day they had rehearsals for their Swim Wear Competition.

Meeting with the press and having photo shoots were a new experience to a lot of the Delegates, but they seemed to enjoy themselves and many of them really enjoyed their new found talent as professional models. Even a couple of supermodels in the making were spotted.

Mr. Gay Europe is a pan-European competition with Delegates from all parts of the continent. The company is however Norwegian with headquarters in Oslo. The Norwegian ambassador to Hungary, Ms. Siri Ellen Sletner summoned the founders to a briefing on the current security situation in Budapest and asked for an update on the competition and the future plans.

Both the Ambassador and First Secretary Ms. Kristin Maroy Stockman revealed a high level of knowledge of the competition, the gay rights situation in Hungary and security challenges the Delegates may be facing during the week’s events.

From the more formal meeting the day’s program carried on to the swim wear competition. The event was created like an art installation in an old building which is being completely renovated. It gave the feeling of being in a modern art gallery somewhere very chic and trendy.

The performance started with an interpretive dancer and a drummer playing off of each other and really set the spectators in the mood for what they were about to experience. The audience were taken into the next room were the Delegates of Mr. Gay Europe were already painting modern art on a wall. They were all dressed in white coveralls.

The 20 Delegates on stage used the colours of the rainbow and created a modern painting with the empty wall as their canvas. It then turned into a show number with the Hungarian drag performer “Ginger” leading the boys in a hot and sexy Kylie Minogue style number, ending up in a swim suit fashion parade in swim costume of their own choosing.

The judges must have had a real difficult job because they picked not only three delegates, they picked four. It was the Delegates from Belgium, Norway, Spain and Malta that was named the four top finalists for the Mr. Gay Swim Wear Contest. The winner of the Swim Wear will be announced at The Grand Finale held at The Copacabana Beach on Margit Island on Saturday July 5, where he will be one of 12 semi-finalists in the battle for the crown at Mr. Gay Europe 2008.

One of the other semi finalists is chosen by the public at www.mrgayeurope.com who has a direct influence on who will be the next winner. Tomorrow, the day before the Grande Finale show, the Delegates will all be interviewed by the panel of judges to determine who will be Mr Gay Europe 2008.

  • Antonio from Spain is Mr. Gay Europe 2008!

Budapest: It was Antonio Pedro Almijes (19) from Spain who Saturday evening took home the crown of Mr. Gay Europe 2008.
The Mr. Gay Europe competition was supposed to have taken place at The Copacabana beach on the lovely Margit Island in the river Danube, but due to security reasons, the local producers took no chances and relocated the event to a secret venue in Budapest. The Grande finale was hosted the main sponsor; Desiré Dubounet.

20 Delegates from The Canary Islands in the south to Norway and Sweden in the north were all in the battle for the crown. From the 20 Delegates, they were narrowed down to 11 semi finalists: Mr Gay Swim Wear: Kai Thomas Ryen Larsen (Norway) and the online voted The People’s Choice: Barry Meegan from Ireland, The No. 1 Talent was selected by the audience and the award went to Graeme R. Williamson from Northern Ireland. “The Challenge” voted by stylists and photographers to be Mr. Photogenic became Stefan Onland from The Netherlands.

The judges then selected Deyan Kolev (Bulgaria), Dempsey (Gran Canaria), Tomás Gáspás (Hungary) Tom Jones (The United Kingdom), Steve Grech (Malta), Matthew Jones (Wales) and finally as a wild card for best performance in the Grande Finale show the jury chose Antonio Pedro Almijes (Spain). Malta, Bulgaria and Spain went on to a super final, where Spain took home the crown!

The judges were: Dean Nelson, the organizer of Mr Gay Canada and Whistler Winter Pride, Matthias Hilse, advertising and art director representing Germany, Joseph Cselényi, an investment broker representing Hungary, the current Miss Gay Hungary Szilvia Freire, the editor of Cosmopolitan Hungary Patrícia Szabó, Ava Costca, topmodel - New York, and also the TV host Barbara Orosz from Cool TV.

The presenters were Adam Webb and Patricia Piringer and among the show numbers were a samba show by Masquenada and a Hungarian modern folk dance troupe and a magic act by “Ginger”. Performing the official Mr. Gay Europe song “Good Evening Europe” was Birgitte Einarsen and joining in were all the cheerful finalists dancing!

The Delegates themselves chose Lev from Slovenia, Barry from Ireland and Stefan from The Netherlands as Mr Congeniality or as the most sympathetic among the candidates themselves in a rose ceremony. A three way tie like this has never happened at MGE before.

Antonio or Tony as he likes to be called is 19 years old and lives in Madrid. He is a lifeguard, swimming teacher, professional swimmer, model, actor and dancer and enjoys travelling, making friends around the world, going to the cinema, reading, photography and walking through big green landscapes.

When asked why he wanted to be in the Mr. Gay Europe Competition he had this to say:

“I would like to take part in this contest because I love the modelling world, photography, make contacts, meet people and make friends around the world, and I think this contest will open doors for my careers and studies. And over all to give a good viewpoint and show how the gay society is.

I want to be take part because I think I can honestly manage quite well and will be proud to represent my country, as I am a young, hard working, a born fighter, and I get going until I reach my goals and everything I want to do. And I want to be take part to show the gay society a young sporty boy, hard worker and with very clear ideas, with a healthy body and mind and over all, a fighter for the things I want to have in my life!”

After the competition Saturday evening Antonio was congratulated by his fellow competitors. He reflected on the fact that he did not only win the title, but also 19 new friends from all over Europe.

“Winning Mr. Gay Europe is a bit overwhelming, but I am excited and I look forward to do my best in supporting not only my home community, but hopefully I can help other young guys in Europe and making them feel that it is okay to come out of the closet and be gay!”
