AYUMI HAMASAKI 10th annoversary and her deafness

-pop diva Hamasaki Ayumi (29) may have lost the hearing in her left ear but she can still put on a big show. Marking her 10th anniversary in showbiz, she held the Tokyo leg of her Asian tour at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium yesterday. She went through 21 songs and nine costume changes during the show. During the encore the 12,000 fans surprised her with a version of the song "Who..." and a tearful Ayu was presented a huge 50kg cake. She will play 27 shows in ten cities across Japan before heading overseas. Details for the Asian shows have yet to be announced. Since her April 8, 1998 debut single "Poker Face", Ayu has amassed sales estimated at ¥200 billion (approx. $2 billion). Her memorial single "Mirrorcle World" was released yesterday and is sure to become her 30th No.1. A Sports Nippon article said that she had "miraculously" recovered some of the hearing in her left ear, but it wasn't mentioned elsewhere and so can't be confirmed. She was seen removing the ear monitor during the show.

On the 8th, Ayumi Hamasaki (29) held her 10th anniversary concert celebrating 10 years since the day her first CD debuted. During the encore, the audience of 12000 people sang the song "Who..." as a surprise to Hamasaki, moving her to tears. Figure skate Mao Asada (17) was also in attendance of the celebration. *Even her left ear, thought to have lost its hearing, faced the anniversary. It was understood that she was recovering.*
Surprised at the presents from her fans, she put her left hand to her mouth, and before long, she was wiping her eyes brimming with tears over and over. So many tears fell that her staff had to hand her a large towel.

A chorus of 12000 people. "Who..." is a song from the album "LOVEppears" (Nov '99) which continued to confirm her as the leader of high school girls. "From now on, that this singing voice may always reach you..." [lyrics of Who] Hamasaki, who wrote these lyrics, has put all of her feelings toward her fans in song and sang them many times. It was the reverse on this day as her fans offered the words "That we may reach Ayu."

Ayumi Hamasaki debuted with the single "Poker Face" on 98-4-8. Since then, she has earned over 200 billion yen over ten years. Her fatigue in mind and body of running to the top is unmeasurable. At the end of lastyear, her physical health was considerably in decline, and there were even doubts about her annual new years live concert.

The loss of hearing in her left ear is not unrelated to ten years of stress. According to a specialist, "Even now her health is not perfect." But, she faced the stage thinking, "I want to use my voice to reach out with all my might."

At lives, she uses inner ear monitors countless times, and the specialist says "I don't know the extent of the hearing loss, but I hear that she can hear as of now." [I think the guy is saying she can still hear ok even with just the right ear.]

At the concert, there were unique scenes such as when Hamasaki appeared in an ornate jeweled dress as well as a pink miniskirt in the "cute girl" style of Seiko Matsuda. During the encore, an enormous 50kg cake was brought on stage. "I'm really happy to have a celebration like this." At the very end, she placed the microphone down and shouted "Thank you!" to the audience with her own voice.

Her anniversary single "Mirrorcle World" debuted on the Oricon daily chart at first place. Already having achieved a record of 30 #1's, it seems to add a decoration of flowers to her anniversary year.

Ayumi Hamasaki's 10th Anniversary single "Mirrorcle World", with sales of about 146,000 units in its first week and beating "Baka-Character" unit Shuuchishin's self-titled single by a slim margin, has become the first 10th Anniversary single by a female artist to reach the #1 spot. Hamasaki joyfully comments, "I'm thankful to all my fans. I think I'll still be making songs 11 and 12 years from now."

Hamasaki confessed to having lost hearing in her left ear due to an inner ear problem in January, but the first day of her national tour began on Saturday, April 5th. Despite worries of her health condition, Ayu is continuing her life. "Mirrorcle World" has the same release date as her debut single "poker face" (1998), which made its first appearance on the weekly chart on April 21st.

Hamasaki's 10 straight years of Number One singles began with the April 26, 1999 release of "LOVE~Destiny~/LOVE~since1999~." As far as #1 Single records go, Akina Nakamori had 9 straight years of #1s (1982's "SECOND LOVE" until 1990's "Dear Freind"), and Ayu is the winning female artist for this generation. Incidentally, first place overall goes to the male artist B'z who have had #1s for 18 years.

Again, this time, Hamasaki has broken the record of total number of #1 singles for a female artist, which is 30, and this record ties in with the aforementioned number of years with #1 singles, giving Hamasaki two shining achievements.

Having achieved this wonderful accomplishment, Hamasaki comments, "Thank you for giving my 10th Anniversary single the #1 spot! And I'm very glad to hear that this #1 single gives me a 10-year record of continued #1's! These past 10 years have given me many new experiences, so it's been a substantial decade. I am thankful to everyone - everyone in my staff, who have supported me up till now, all of the writers, and to all my fans. I think I'll still be making songs 11 and 12 years from now so please stick around!"

Although the weekly single ranking has attracted so much attention, Hamasaki shows the dignity of a queen.
