He was without doubt one of the most disturbed and disturbing individuals I have ever encountered.
I was asked to try to find him after his name came up in connection with a story about a vile video posted on the internet in which a kitten was fed to a python.
Then the 29-year-old Canadian — now wanted over a cannibal killing — turned up at The Sun’s London offices to deny something we had not yet asked him about. His behaviour was highly suspicious.

After the visit we tracked him down to The Fusilier pub in Wembley, north-west London, where he had a £40-a-night single room.
He welcomed us in, looking decidedly strange. He was wearing a flat cap, leather jacket and tracksuit bottoms. On his face he had foundation and blue eye shadow.
I looked into his eyes — and did not like what I saw.
It wasn’t just his appearance that was weird — his behaviour was very odd as well. In a strange, high-pitched voice, he spent 20 minutes denying that he was involved in killing the kitten.

But behind the denials it seemed he was getting some sort of bizarre pleasure out of the attention. I suspected that pleasure was sexual.
After interviewing Magnotta we waited outside to see if we could quiz him again.
We were surprised when the police then turned up. We asked them if they were investigating the cat killings. But we were told to mind our own business.
Magnotta was escorted off the premises by two plain-clothed cops and the hotel manager.
He was put into the back of a mini-cab and was driven off. That was the last we saw of him.

We contacted the Met’s Press Bureau media office to tell them what we had been investigating.
I was shocked and confused when we were later told that the police had only gone to the hotel to help evict Magnotta — not to question him at all.
Two days later an email was sent to The Sun’s offices.

It described how the killer planned to move on from killing animals to human victims.
And I was chilled to realise it referred to me. The email described in lurid, horrifying detail the disgusting things he wanted to do to me — acts of the darkest sexual and violent nature.
The words are too vile to repeat. I can still recall my revulsion when I read these crazed threats.
The twisted author used the name of Moors murders victim John Kilbride as an email address. But I suspected it came from Magnotta.
In his sick reference to me, the writer said: “You have some very sexy journalists at your paper.
“I have one I’m very keen on now. He was very sexy.”
He then gloatingly described his warped sexual fantasies.
The sender, who described himself as a “genius”, signed off by saying: “You know, the fun part of all this is watching millions of people get angry and frustrated because they can’t catch me.
“It’s fun watching people work so hard gathering all the evidence, then not being able to name me or catch me.
“You see, I always win. I always hold the trump card and I will continue to make more movies.
“London is wonderful because all the people are so stupid. It’s easy.
“So, I have to disappear for a while, until people quit bothering me. But next time you hear from me it will be in a movie I am producing that will have some humans in it, not just pussies.

“Things I have seen and the things I have done, you can only imagine.
“Well, it was fun f****** around with everyone, so have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. I know I will.
I felt sure that the threats it contained should be taken seriously and contacted the police. Unfortunately it did not result in Magnotta being detained.
I received the vile email on a Saturday. On the following Monday morning I went into Limehouse Police Station in East London and reported my suspicions.
My complaint was filed as a malicious communication and the case was passed to Islington Police in North London.
I gave them all the information I had discovered in my inquiries.
After an initial response from the officer in the case I then heard nothing more about it. If the police had stopped investigating Magnotta, then I was not told.
I showed the letter to my partner, who was very concerned.
I reassured her that I was not afraid and that the man behind this was a coward who would never dare try and hurt us.
But I did have a niggling fear at the back of my mind.
Now, with police fearing he has fled a murder probe in Canada for Europe, I hope he is caught soon — so I for one can relax.

SON OF SAM David Berkowitz shot dead six people in New York in the 1970s. He killed dogs as a boy and said he was commanded to kill by a possessed dog.
TED BUNDY watched his father torture animals. He admitted 30 US murders in the 1970s. As a boy, ANDREW CUNANAN, who killed designer Gianni Versace in 1997, burned out crabs’ eyes with matches.
CROSSBOW CANNIBAL Stephen Griffiths, 42 — who killed hookers in Bradford in 2009-10 — once ate a live RAT.

They are set to launch a huge cold case review as soon as the fugitive is caught.
Cops are convinced Magnotta may have killed others in recent years and are now desperate to snare him as soon as they can.
Former gay porn star Magnotta, 29, has now spent eight nights on the run since fleeing Montreal after a male pal was found CHOPPED up and EATEN.
Police also confirmed a sickening online film which allegedly showed the grisly murder taking place WAS authentic.
Montreal Police Commander Ian Lafrenière said: “The film is just so graphic and disturbing.
“Imagine the worst horror movie you’ve ever seen and it’s worse than that and it’s real. The murderer just tears the victim apart like a doll.”
Last night a police source vowed: “The number one priority for us is catching Magnotta.
“But you can bet as soon as we’ve done that we’ll be going through cold cases, unsolved murders, to see if there are any links to him at all.”

The shock new twist emerged 48 hours after we handed over our file of evidence to cops in Montreal.
The Sun had warned Scotland Yard last December of the danger Magnotta posed after he had two sinister meetings with our reporters.
At the time, we showed Met detectives vile footage of Magnotta killing a live kitten by feeding it to a python.

We also flagged up a mysterious email sent to our offices just two days after Magnotta had met Sun man Alex West and hinted a human would be next to die on film.
The email’s sender chillingly boasted: “Once you kill, and taste blood, it’s impossible to stop. The urge is just too strong not to continue.” But the force dropped its probe and did not pass on what may prove to have been potentially life-saving intelligence to cops in Magnotta’s home nation.

Mr Lafrenière told us: “It would have been helpful to have had this six months ago. When you read the email in the wake of the week gone past you think the sender is saying, ‘It’s coming’. You read that email and, whoever’s behind it, he’s celebrating and enjoying every word.”
Bi-sexual Magnotta is thought to be in hiding in Europe. He has at least three aliases and could be dressed in DRAG — using wigs and make-up to disguise his appearance.

But Mr Lafrenière added: “Magnotta is leaving a lot of traces behind, that’s for sure.
“Whether that’s because he wants us to find them isn’t certain, but he’s deliberately looking for attention. He wants publicity big time.” Yesterday it emerged cops had investigated Magnotta for sexually assaulting a girl in Ontario in 2005, but the case was later dropped.
Photos posted on dozens of his social media profiles show Magnotta in cities all over the globe.
In one he pretends to stab an actor dressed as a gladiator outside Rome’s Colosseum. Other photos show him brandishing a knife, holding a cat and posing in front of Moscow’s famous onion domes.
Last night a police source admitted: “This is the worst case many of us have seen in our entire careers.”

We noticed a long-standing gaming account held by him had been accessed on Friday — and then again yesterday.
The breakthrough came after it emerged that Magnotta had escaped by the skin of his teeth on Saturday after officers tracked him to a hotel. They raided his room — but he had already left.
The baby-faced fugitive sparked a global manhunt last Tuesday when his male pal Jun Lin, 33, was found chopped up and EATEN.
We first alerted Brit cops to creepy Magnotta, 29, in December after we met him in London — and told them we believed he was behind a spate of horrific kitten killing videos posted online.
Days later, we received an email that we believed was from him, which hinted a human would be the next to die on film.
But Scotland Yard ignored evidence we handed to them — and failed to pass on any intelligence abroad.

Then, last Tuesday, the body of Chinese engineering student Lin — who was thought to have been having a sexual relationship with Magnotta — was found in a dingy flat in Montreal.
But the dragnet around ex- gay porn star Magnotta was closing yesterday after we unearthed the online clue and alerted Canadian cops.
They are already thought to have contacted French detectives, who launched Saturday’s raid at the hotel in Paris — where Magnotta fled three days before Lin’s body was found.

Some of the suspect’s belongings were recovered and have been sent for DNA tests. They include porn mags and, bizarrely, plane sick bags — thought to have been taken from the flight he took from Montreal.
Multiple sightings of him have been reported in the French capital.
In one incident, a gay man reported a narrow escape after inviting someone back to his flat. The guest then fled when the man thought he recognised him as Canadian Magnotta.
Sources revealed he has been using the Metro tube system. And on Thursday a witness saw him drinking in the quiet Batignolles district.

Montreal homicide detectives quizzed us within hours over our online tip and were quick to thank us, but the Met’s inaction was blasted by a criminal behaviour expert in Canada. Jacques Lesage said: “You have to take these threats seriously. If you read something like that, that shows a clear intention (to commit a crime). You need to worry about it.”
Other online postings we found give further insights into the world of the bisexual, who is obsessed with dead film star James Dean.
A short animation which appears to have been created by him shows a red handprint and the chilling message: “It was Luka Magnotta” written as though in blood.
He has at least three aliases and has been on the run for ten days.
Magnotta is one of Interpol’s most wanted and faces five charges, including first degree murder.
